Delays and Retreats on Critical Labor and Social Issues

MP Andros Kavkalias of AKEL expresses serious concerns about the government's delays and retreats on critical labor and social issues. Following a briefing by the Minister of Labor, Marinos Mousiouttas, he points out that important reforms, such as pension reform and the institutionalization of paid internships, remain pending or have regressed compared to previous commitments. Specifically, AKEL criticizes the delay in submitting bills for pension reform, emphasizing that issues such as increasing the minimum pension, the 12% penalty, and discrimination in widow's pensions remain unresolved. Despite the government's promise to submit a bill by June, AKEL believes this is delayed, as a commitment had been made for the end of 2025. Furthermore, concerns are raised about the increase in state debt to the Social Insurance Fund and the need for a clear repayment plan. On the issue of paid internships, Mr. Kavkalias denounces a "major setback" from the government, which appears to be changing its position and linking the issue to European directives. AKEL recalls that there were previous commitments to legislate on the matter by November, but these were not kept. Overall, AKEL accuses the government of exacerbating insecurity and social inequalities with its policies, while emphasizing the need for substantial reforms and the protection of the rights of workers, pensioners, young people, and vulnerable families.
