No Tolerance for Public Discourse Insulting People with Disabilities

The comment made by MEP Fidias Panagiotou regarding people with intellectual disabilities during an interview with a candidate for the Direct Democracy ballot, sparked strong reactions from organizations representing people with disabilities. The Cypriot Paralympic Committee condemned the comment as offensive and unacceptable, emphasizing that it cannot be justified as a “slip of the tongue” or “humor”. The Committee calls on Mr. Panagiotou to apologize and express respect towards people with disabilities. AKEL described the statements as “deeply problematic”, pointing out that it is not a misunderstanding but an attitude inconsistent with the institutional role of the MEP. It stressed that public discourse that insults people with disabilities should not be tolerated. DISY also condemns the MEP's comment as “inappropriate, highly disparaging and offensive”. The president of Agalia Elpidas, Yula Pitsiali, emphasized that the way someone speaks reveals their values and mentality, and that the use of offensive terms undermines the principles of equality and social justice. The incident highlights the importance of respect and awareness towards people with disabilities, as well as the need for public discourse that promotes inclusion and equality.
