Cyprus Paralympic Committee Condemns Offensive Comment by MEP

The Cyprus Paralympic Committee has strongly condemned an offensive comment made by MEP Fidias Panagiotou during a podcast, regarding people with intellectual disabilities. The comment was made while hosting Paralympic swimmer Loizos Chrysanthou and concerned the S14 category, which includes athletes with intellectual disabilities. The Committee describes the comment as dismissive, stigmatizing, and backward, emphasizing that it harms people with intellectual disabilities and the Paralympic Movement. It points out that the use of such expressions cannot be justified as a “slip of the tongue” or “humor.” The Committee calls on the MEP to publicly acknowledge his mistake and promote respect and awareness. At the same time, it calls on society and the media to support the socialization and equal integration of people with disabilities. The case has provoked strong reactions in Cyprus and is expected to lead to a discussion about addressing disability and protecting the rights of people with disabilities.
