Prisoner in Property Dispute Alleges Humiliating Conditions and Neglect in Cypriot Jail

A German real estate agent accused of illegally acquiring Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied territories has alleged humiliating conditions during her detention in Cypriot prisons. Her lawyer submitted a request for conditional release, arguing that his client has endured degrading treatment over the past 18 months, citing the large number of prosecution witnesses and the extensive evidence. Specifically, he claimed her prescribed medication was unjustly discontinued in December 2024, with interruptions and delays in its reinstatement despite assurances and the registration of the drugs in the Republic of Cyprus. Furthermore, he reported finding a mouse head in her food. The Court rejected the release request at this stage, to allow the accused to prepare a written testimony regarding her detention conditions. The prosecution will subsequently submit written testimony from the Central Prisons, responding to the allegations. The defense lawyer proposed alternative arrangements, including residence in a hotel near the courthouse, a deposit of funds, daily reporting to a police station, and surrender of travel documents. The lawyer presented correspondence with the Prisons, the Commissioner of Administration, and other officials, as well as a copy of the latest report by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) regarding the Central Prisons. This report, published in April 2025, contains observations on detention conditions. The President of the Criminal Court requested clarification regarding the accused's health issues, with the lawyer stating they relate to an accident and other health problems. The case continues with the anticipation of the written testimony and the Prisons' response.
