Cyprus Close to Schengen Zone – Significant Progress Made in All Technical Requirements

Cyprus is close to joining the Schengen area, as the European Commission is expected to adopt the Schengen assessment report for the country in the coming months. European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, stated that Cyprus has made significant progress in all technical requirements, turning the decision into a political matter to be considered by the Council once readiness is confirmed. Mr. Brunner emphasized the Commission's full support for Cyprus's efforts and referred to the importance of Schengen for freedom of movement, tourism, and trade. He also noted a significant reduction in illegal border crossings and progress in implementing the Migration and Asylum Pact.
