DR Congo: Islamist Rebels Kill 15 in Lubero, North Kivu

Rebels linked to the Islamic State have killed at least 15 people in three villages in the Lubero area of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, continuing their attacks primarily targeting civilians. The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) initially operated as a rebel group in Uganda but have been based in the forests of neighboring DR Congo since the late 1990s and are recognized by the Islamic State as an affiliate. Armed forces from both DR Congo and Uganda are conducting operations against the ADF, but the group's raids continue. According to the local community leader, the latest attacks occurred on Thursday evening in Lubero, North Kivu province, with victims killed by blades and in a shootout with soldiers. The Congolese army has confirmed the deaths of 16 people and is pursuing the rebels. The UN peacekeeping mission in DR Congo, MONUSCO, reported 89 civilian deaths by ADF within a week in November. Local officials are requesting increased security measures to safely organize funerals.
