€4.1 Million Approved for Wildfire Prevention and Response

The Council of Ministers has approved measures totaling €4.1 million for the prevention and response to agricultural and forest fires. The measures include cleaning abandoned agricultural land, granting subsidies for the purchase of fire engines and equipment by Community Councils, and leasing earth movers and tankers. The aim is to strengthen preparedness and prevention in anticipation of the summer period. The Ministry of Interior will allocate the funds for the cleaning of abandoned agricultural land and areas around communities, either through Community Services Clusters or directly to Community Councils, accelerating procedures. The allocation of funds was based on cost estimates made by the Provincial Administrations in February. The Fire Service is cooperating with Community Leaders to determine the radii around villages where firebreaks should be created. Community Councils will be subsidized for the purchase of fire engines, with priority given to communities bordering forests or in clusters with a low number of fire engines. In addition, the Council of Ministers had increased the subsidy rate for the purchase of fire engines from 50% to 80% last May, resulting in the approval of 32 additional applications from Community Councils totaling €1.28 million.
