Three Communities Unite Against Dhekelia Bases

Local authorities in Xylotymbou, Ormideia, and Xylofagou have reached their limit due to the indifference of the British Bases regarding significant issues affecting their communities. The main problem is the delay in finalizing the new urban planning zones, which have been determined since 2022 but remain inactive due to the Bases' authorities failing to review objections. This delay hinders the utilization of properties and negatively impacts the region's development, while there is also an issue with the refusal to grant permits for the expansion of quarries. As a result, the Community Councils of the three villages are organizing a large protest on Saturday, January 31, 2026, outside the Dhekelia police station, calling on residents to participate and support their demands. The purpose of the protest is to put pressure on the Bases' administration to speed up the process of finalizing the urban planning zones. The communities emphasize that they are not asking for privileges, but for respect, fairness, and consistency in the implementation of agreements. Additionally, they will express their support for the quarries' efforts to secure expansion permits, given the shortage of construction materials. This situation has led to tension between local authorities and the Bases' administration, with the communities threatening further escalation of mobilizations if there are no positive developments. Resolving the problem is considered crucial for the economic and social development of the region.
