Cyprus Mourns Former President George Vassiliou

The body of George Vassiliou, the third President of the Republic of Cyprus, is on public display, with crowds paying their respects and bidding farewell with tears. The funeral service will be held tomorrow, Saturday, with honors befitting a serving head of state, and the day has been declared a public holiday. Mr. Vassiliou's driver for 26 years, Averof Moritsis, described him as a “second father” and stated that the most important moment for the deceased was his decision to support Glaukos Clerides in the Presidential elections, prioritizing the freedom of the homeland above all else. Mr. Moritsis also emphasized Mr. Vassiliou's concern for resolving the Cyprus issue and expressed confidence that, had he been re-elected in 1993, he would have succeeded in doing so.
