Severe Weather Warning in Place as Cyprus Rings in the New Year

A yellow warning for hazardous weather conditions, including storms, strong winds, and snow, is in effect until 10:00 PM today, New Year's Eve. The Meteorological Department forecasts that the phenomena will mainly affect the coastal and mountainous areas of Cyprus, with the possibility of hail during storms and localized rainfall exceeding 55mm. Low pressure and strengthened wind fields are expected to persist until Thursday. Today, the weather will be cloudy with rain and isolated thunderstorms, while snow or sleet is expected at the highest peaks of Troodos. Winds will be strong to very strong, reaching 7 Beaufort in coastal areas. Tonight, the phenomena will continue, mainly in the west and north, with the possibility of hail and snow in Troodos. Winds will be moderate to strong, with local reinforcements. The temperature will drop significantly, especially in the mountains, where frost is expected. On New Year's Day, the weather will be intermittently cloudy with isolated showers, mainly in the western half of the island. Snow or sleet is expected in the higher mountains. Friday and Saturday are forecast to have locally increased cloud cover, with a temperature drop on Friday and a rise on Saturday.
