Cyprus and EU Intensify Engagement with Arab Nations Amidst Regional Tensions

Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, held a series of telephone conversations with Foreign Ministers from countries in the Middle East and the Gulf, including Kuwait, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. This move represents the first major initiative of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, aiming to strengthen diplomatic efforts during a period of heightened tension, particularly due to the unrest in Iran. Both officials emphasized the importance of dialogue and de-escalation to promote regional stability and security.
