Paphos Hospital: Autonomy Remains on Paper

Despite the recent passage of legislation granting autonomy to public hospitals, the Paphos Hospital remains administratively dependent on Limassol. This autonomy, sought for years, would allow Paphos to have its own representation on the OCYP Council and its own budget for health matters. MP Chrysanthos Savvides, who championed the issue in Parliament, has requested the new Minister of Health to expedite the process of announcing a position for an Executive Director, which is essential for implementing the autonomy. The lack of an Executive Director is the main obstacle to the practical application of autonomy. Without one, Paphos cannot be autonomously represented in the OCYP and manage its own budget. This delay has caused disappointment among the local community and hospital staff. The new Minister of Health, Neophytos Charalambides, was informed about the problem during his recent visit to Paphos Hospital. He is expected to consider the request for intervention with the OCYP and to promote the necessary procedures. The autonomy of Paphos Hospital is considered important for improving the quality of health services in the region and for better responding to local needs. The local community hopes that the government will prioritize the issue and implement the autonomy as soon as possible.
