Controversial Protest Law Amended After Backlash, But Mask Clause Remains

A new protest law in Cyprus, initially considered restrictive of public reaction, has been amended following strong opposition and pressure from the OSCE. The original provisions, which required 7 days' notice for demonstrations of more than 20 people and control of banners, were deemed a institutional muzzle. The amendments abolish the notification requirement for spontaneous gatherings and allow demonstrations outside buildings of power. However, one point remains worrying: the permission to use masks during demonstrations, which could facilitate anonymity and avoidance of responsibility. The law, although improved, is a product of pressure and not a genuine effort to protect freedom of assembly.
