Defense Minister Clarifies Situation Regarding Economically Vulnerable Soldiers and Joint Brigade Rumors

The Minister of Defense, Vasilis Palmas, intervened on Politis 107.6 and 97.6 radio to clarify the situation regarding economically vulnerable soldiers and rumors of a joint brigade with Greece and Israel. He acknowledged the existence of impoverished soldiers but denied reports of soldiers not requesting overnight leave because they have nowhere to go, emphasizing that conscripts now serve near their place of origin. The National Guard, according to Mr. Palmas, provides support to soldiers facing financial difficulties through exit facilitation, financial assistance, and vouchers for essential goods. Additionally, a Social Problems Committee operates to examine cases and propose solutions, such as transfers or additional facilities. The Minister of Defense stressed that these incidents are isolated and represent a broader social issue that cannot be solved solely by the military. Regarding the rumors of a joint brigade with Greece and Israel, Mr. Palmas categorically rejected them, noting that Cyprus maintains cooperation with friendly countries within the framework of joint exercises and training, aiming for stability and security in the Eastern Mediterranean.
