“World in Chaos”: Guterres Warns for 2026

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, expressed deep concern over the global situation, describing it as "chaos" and "uncertainty". In his New Year's message, he called on leaders to take responsibility and prioritize people and the planet, denouncing the continued increase in military spending at the expense of development aid. Specifically, he noted that global military spending reached $2.7 trillion, 13 times the amount of development assistance and equivalent to the GDP of the entire African continent. Mr. Guterres stressed the need to invest more in poverty reduction and less in wars, urging everyone to contribute to finding collective solutions for a safer future. This message comes shortly before the end of his term as Secretary-General.
