Russian Oligarchs in Video with Lakotrypi and Alleged Circumvention of Sanctions

A video posted on X (formerly Twitter) has caused a political earthquake in Cyprus, containing dialogues between former Energy Minister Giorgos Lakotrypi, the President's Office Director Charalambos Charalambous, and businessman Giorgos Chrysos. The dialogues, allegedly secretly recorded, imply illegal funding of Nikos Christodoulides' election campaign, suspicious donations to the Presidential Palace and the First Lady's Fund, and mechanisms to circumvent European sanctions for the benefit of Russian oligarchs. In the video, Mr. Lakotrypi refers to problems faced by the LetterOne company due to sanctions on its shareholders, but claims that a way was found to continue the company's operations, ensuring that Cyprus would maintain a stable position in the EU. The government describes the video as edited and an attempt to defame the Cypriot Republic.
