Rise in Crime in Cyprus: An Expert's Analysis

A series of violent incidents, including murders, attempted murders, and clashes, have shocked Cyprus recently, causing a sense of insecurity among citizens. Criminologist Dimitra Tsitsi points out that organized crime is finding fertile ground in Cyprus due to the weaknesses of the state mechanism, such as understaffing of the Police, lack of modern equipment, and institutional conflicts. Tsitsi emphasizes that the increase in crime is directly linked to the unresolved issue of migration. Furthermore, she criticizes the Police's focus on secondary issues, such as working hours, while serious crimes are committed. She believes that Cyprus, due to its small population, should not face such high crime rates as in larger European countries. The criminologist stresses the need for immediate implementation of measures and not just announcements, as well as the need for investment in modern equipment and increased police personnel. She points out that the lack of patrol cars makes it impossible to increase patrols as proposed by the Ministry of Justice.
