Ozטורקler: Cyprus' Defense Agreements Disrupt Regional Balance

Published January 11, 2026, 13:19

The “president” of the parliament of the occupied territories, Ziya Ozטורקler, stated that the Republic of Cyprus' defense agreements with Israel and Greece negatively affect the balance of power in the region. He argued that Cyprus is turning into an “arms depot” and that these agreements involve the arrival of foreign troops on the island. Mr. Ozטורקler reiterated the need for Turkish guarantees and the presence of the occupying army, while accusing the Republic of Cyprus of contradictory statements regarding the withdrawal of the “army” and the strengthening of its defense. Finally, he predicted that Cyprus' military activities pose risks to the region and linked the country's assumption of the EU Presidency to the need for international recognition of the pseudo-state.
