Cypriots Favor EU Expansion, But With Reservations

According to a Eurobarometer survey, Cypriots are more positive about the future enlargement of the European Union compared to the EU average. 69% of respondents in Cyprus are in favor of enlargement, while the EU average is 56%. Conversely, only 29% express a negative attitude, significantly lower than the 38% recorded at the European level. Cyprus records one of the highest levels of support for enlargement, along with Ireland, and approaches the levels of positivity in Lithuania and Sweden. This suggests that Cypriot society still views enlargement as a strategic choice, despite any reservations that may exist regarding specific candidacies, such as Turkey. However, the majority of Cypriots maintain restrained expectations regarding the benefits of enlargement, estimating that they will be “few” (45%) and only 15% believing they will be “many”. This highlights a realistic and cautious attitude of public opinion, which recognizes the potential benefits at the institutional level but doubts the direct impact on citizens’ lives. The attitude of Cypriots varies significantly depending on the candidate country, with strong support for Serbia, Georgia, and Moldova, but increased reservations towards Ukraine and strong opposition to Albania and Kosovo. The survey captures a clear hierarchy of trust and political preferences.
