UNFICYP: Kasim Diagne to Brief UN on Cyprus Situation

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus and head of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Kasim Diagne, will brief representatives of countries contributing to UNFICYP behind closed doors today. On January 15th, he will update the UN Security Council on the situation in Cyprus, and on January 29th, the Council will vote on renewing UNFICYP's mandate for another year. The main issue remaining at the center of the Security Council is the lack of progress in restarting negotiations on the Cyprus issue, despite recent meetings between the leaders of the two communities under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy. The Council is expected to consider ways to encourage both sides to build on recent contacts and avoid actions that could escalate tensions, especially in the buffer zone. In addition, the potential impact of fiscal adjustments on UNFICYP and the UN Good Offices will be examined.
