Ustel: TRNC Considers Republic of Cyprus' Actions on Properties 'Illegal and Hostile'

The spokesperson for the Turkish Cypriot leader, Beran Ustel, has described the Republic of Cyprus' actions regarding Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied territories as “illegal and hostile.” He claimed these actions are politically motivated and contrary to international law. Mr. Ustel criticized the Greek Cypriot side for the new wave of arrests and prosecutions related to properties in the occupied territories, arguing that this cycle of actions aims to put pressure on the Turkish Cypriot community. He asserted that the Republic of Cyprus is ignoring the Founding Treaties of 1960, the European Convention on Human Rights, and the principles of international law. Mr. Ustel referred to a recent decision by French courts to release a citizen of the occupied territories, arguing that this demonstrates the weakness of the legal basis of the Republic of Cyprus' claims. He also accused the Republic of Cyprus of ignoring the “Immovable Property Commission,” which the European Court of Human Rights has recognized as an effective remedy. Mr. Ustel stated that Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot side will take all necessary measures to protect the rights of citizens in the occupied territories, calling on the Republic of Cyprus to show “reason” and abandon its “dangerous policies.”
