Princess Irene, the youngest sister of former King Constantine and Queen Sofia, passed away at the age of 83 in Madrid due to health complications. Queen Sofia had recently canceled her commitments due to her sister's deteriorating health. The Princess Irene was born in South Africa in 1942, during the family's exile, and first visited Greece at the age of four. She studied at a German boarding school with her siblings and Prince Philip. For many years, Princess Irene lived in Greece, but in 2018 she acquired Spanish citizenship and settled permanently in Spain. She was a close associate and confidante of her sister, Queen Sofia. With her death, Queen Sofia loses a precious sister and friend. Princess Irene moved to the Zarzuela Palace in 1981, after the death of their mother, Queen Frederica, and remained close to her sister until the end of her life.
