Panayiotou: Presidency Priority is Supporting Farmers, Additional €45 Billion to the MFF

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou, emphasized that the Cypriot Presidency of the Council will prioritize supporting farmers and rural communities. This will be done by promoting work in all relevant Council formations, aiming to achieve progress on this important issue. The minister referred to the concerns expressed by European farmers in recent months and the need for swift and effective action. She pointed out that Cyprus will work to ensure a sustainable and competitive agricultural sector, while also strengthening the EU's food security. Specifically, the minister proposed further support for farmers within the next Multiannual Financial Framework, as well as examining the transfer of certain provisions of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) from the MFF regulation to the CAP regulations. The Commission proposed mobilizing an additional €45 billion to support farmers and rural communities from 2028, in addition to the at least €300 billion that will be committed to the CAP. This means that the total support for the agricultural sector could reach €400 billion, an amount higher than the previous framework. Furthermore, it was mentioned that the cost of fertilizers remains high, about 60% above 2020, and the Commission will propose the temporary suspension of the remaining MF duties.
