Taxi Drivers in Paphos Protest 'Piracy' and Unregulated Practices

Taxi drivers in Paphos held a 24-hour strike, protesting the increase in 'piracy' and unregulated practices in the industry. Drivers claim that illegal passenger transport has doubled in recent years, with anyone with a car being able to register on illegal platforms. They also report violations of seat regulations and the illegal operation of intercity and rural taxis in urban areas, as well as the use of rental cars for driver-provided transportation instead of self-driving by tourists. The President of the Paphos Airport Taxi Drivers, Leonidas Kouris, emphasized the need for stricter control and highlighted their solidarity with their colleagues in Larnaca, who face similar problems. The situation has reached a point where drivers wait up to 24 hours for a single fare. Taxi driver Lazaros Poponidis called on the Ministry of Transport to honor its commitments and facilitate taxi access to Paphos Airport, as recent changes for security reasons have created difficulties. He also mentioned the problem of buses parking in the airport area, hindering taxi access. The taxi drivers are demanding an immediate solution to the problems they face, as they believe the sustainability of their industry is at risk. The strike is an attempt to raise awareness among the government and the public about the consequences of 'piracy' and unregulated practices.
