Dead Turtle Case Deemed a Criminal Offense

Published January 14, 2026, 06:28

The Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, Antonia Theodosiou, describes the mistreatment of a dead sea turtle captured in a video as a criminal offense, not simple negligence. Cyprus has been at the forefront of sea turtle protection since 1971 and has a strict legal framework. Ms. Theodosiou points out the awkwardness and inadequate implementation of protocols for managing dead turtles, even by trained local government staff. She calls for exemplary penalties and announces enhanced training for local government employees on wildlife issues. The case is under investigation by the Police.
