Cyprus Assumes EU Presidency Amidst 'Deep Change'

The Republic of Cyprus has assumed the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on January 1st, 2026, during a period of geopolitical upheaval and profound change. President Nikos Christodoulides stated that Cyprus will work towards a Europe that is strong, stable, and secure, with an emphasis on autonomy, defense, maritime security, and addressing migration. Cyprus will maintain its steadfast support for Ukraine, upholding international law, its territorial integrity, and sovereignty. Simultaneously, it will promote simplification of procedures, reduction of bureaucracy, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises and innovation. The Presidency will also focus on deepening relations with transatlantic partners and strengthening collaborations with the southern neighborhood and the Gulf region. Cyprus will advocate for an open, strong, and sustainable trade policy, expanding the network of trade agreements. Finally, President Christodoulides mentioned that Cyprus will work to advance a credible EU enlargement agenda, as well as social cohesion, focusing on affordable housing and protecting children online. The Cypriot Presidency aims for a Europe that is autonomous, open to the world, and based on its values.
