Parliamentary Committee Discusses Amendments to Property Ownership Laws for Third-Country Nationals

The House Internal Affairs Committee discussed a package of proposed laws to amend legislation regarding the acquisition of real estate by citizens of third countries in Cyprus. DISY MP Nikos Georgiou stated that the issue is being addressed with seriousness and responsibility, away from populism, and that the Democratic Rally has been raising the issue of modernizing the legal framework for a year. Mr. Georgiou mentioned that concerns do not stem from the development of the real estate sector, but from the need to maintain balances, safeguard the public interest, and the interests of the country. He emphasized the importance of attracting quality investments, but also carefully managing land ownership, especially in areas that may create risks to national security. AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou stated that AKEL has submitted two proposals for laws to introduce control and restrictions on the sale of property to citizens of third countries, as well as to adopt objective criteria. He expressed his satisfaction with the unanimous agreement in the Committee regarding the existence of the problem and the need to address it. Mr. Stefanou mentioned that the uncontrolled sale of property to citizens of third countries has implications for national security, especially in areas near the ceasefire line or other sensitive infrastructure. In addition, he referred to the potential increase in property prices and its impact on Cypriots' access to ownership.
