Christmas Meal Costs: Beef Prices Rise, Pork Prices Fall

The Christmas Observatory of the Consumer Protection Service reveals significant fluctuations in the prices of foods that make up the traditional New Year's meal. Compared to last year, beef prices have increased by up to 22.87% depending on the cut, while pork prices have decreased by up to 4.92%. The prices of lamb and chicken remain relatively stable. At the same time, desserts such as melomakarona and kourabiedes have also increased in price, while some vegetables, such as cucumbers, show a significant increase, while others, such as potatoes and tomatoes, have decreased. The research was based on a sample of prices from 86 butchers and supermarkets, 35 vegetable sales points and 45 bakeries/pastry shops in all provinces, in order to better inform consumers.
