Raging Wildfires in Australia: 'Catastrophic' Conditions Forecast

Uncontrollable wildfires are raging in the state of Victoria, Australia, forcing residents to evacuate their homes. Authorities have issued a warning for the highest level of fire danger for tomorrow, Friday, January 9th. Two major fires are burning near the towns of Longwood and Walwa, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. The fires have already destroyed infrastructure and are expected to spread further due to rising temperatures and winds. The Longwood fire has burned over 250,000 acres, while the Walwa fire has destroyed 100,000 acres and has created its own weather system with pyrocumulonimbus clouds, causing lightning and thunder. Residents of dozens of towns have been called to evacuate. Authorities have set the fire danger level to “catastrophic” for tomorrow, warning of risks to life and property. Fire Chief Jason Heffernan described the situation as “very, very difficult.” The fires are occurring during a severe heatwave, with conditions reminiscent of the 2019 “Black Summer,” when 33 people lost their lives. Approximately 450 schools are expected to remain closed and many train routes will be canceled tomorrow. In New Zealand, the meteorological service is warning of record high temperatures over the weekend.
