Roberta Metsola: "Together We Can Be Better Coordinated and Stable" - US-EU Crisis and Cypriot Presidency

The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, emphasized the importance of cooperation between the European Union and the United States in addressing global challenges, such as the crisis surrounding Greenland and Donald Trump's references to potential tariffs on European products. Metsola stated that despite differences, the EU and the US share common values and principles that ensure stability in their relationship. Ms. Metsola's statements come at a critical time, as Brussels-Washington relations are at a crossroads amid Trump's campaign announcements. Despite Trump's more conciliatory stance at Davos, the EU remains concerned and seeks to form a common line to address potential challenges. The Republic of Cyprus, holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU, has taken on a significant role in managing this crisis. President Christodoulides presented the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency to the European Parliament and met with Ms. Metsola to discuss the issue of Greenland. MEPs from all political groups expressed their concern about Trump's threats. There are different approaches among the EU member states, with France and the Scandinavian countries preferring a tougher line, while Germany and Italy are seeking a more conciliatory stance. Italy, with the close relationship between Prime Minister Meloni and Trump, has been proposed as a potential mediator to restore communication between the EU and the US.
