A major outcry has been caused by an offensive comment made by MEP Fidias Panagiotou during a podcast with Paralympic swimmer Lois Chrysanthis. Mr. Panagiotou referred to athletes in the S-14 category, who have intellectual disabilities, using derogatory terms. The comment caused embarrassment and reactions from Mr. Chrysanthis, who tried to explain that the S-14 category refers to athletes with intellectual disabilities. Mr. Panagiotou appeared to justify himself, claiming he had been misunderstood. The Cypriot Paralympic Committee, KYSOA, DISY and AKEL strongly condemned Mr. Panagiotou's comment, describing it as offensive and unacceptable. They stressed that the use of such expressions is not consistent with the institutional role of an MEP and insults people with intellectual disabilities. The video with the offensive comment has been circulating on Youtube for two weeks, but gained widespread publicity in the last 24 hours. The case has sparked heated debate and put Mr. Panagiotou in a difficult position.
