Savvides: Decision on Attorney General's Accountability Lies Solely with Parliament

The Attorney General of the Republic, George Savvides, stated that the decision regarding the accountability of the Attorney General lies solely with the House of Representatives. Following a “very constructive discussion” in the Parliamentary Legal Committee, Savvides noted that the discussion has not yet reached a specific point. There are two main proposals on the table: the bill from the Ministry of Justice, which regulates the review of the Attorney General’s decisions after a possible separation of the office, and the bill proposed by Diko MP Christiana Erotokritou, which concerns the direct review of the Attorney General’s decisions, regardless of the separation. Savvides presented the position of the Legal Service, emphasizing that Parliament must decide whether to proceed with the review independently of the separation or whether to discuss all related bills, including the separation. He also expressed the Legal Service’s constitutional reservations regarding the separation. During the discussion, concerns were raised by the Supreme Court regarding the increased workload that would result from reviewing decisions. The need for review at the level of the Supreme Court was also highlighted. Savvides stressed the importance of the correct procedure and appropriate level for creating a strong system of accountability.
