Cyprus Faces Trade Restrictions Due to Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak

Cyprus is facing increasing trade restrictions following the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the occupied territories. Following Australia, Canada has imposed strict monitoring and restrictions on imports from the entire island, banning fresh meat, unpasteurized milk, and genetic material. However, halloumi exports to Canada do not appear to be directly affected due to the heat treatment it undergoes. Saudi Arabia, a key trading partner of Cyprus, is considering a full embargo on halloumi imports, causing significant concern among Cypriot cheese producers. The situation is worsened by the fact that Australia has already imposed restrictions on halloumi that does not meet specific criteria. Despite the absence of cases in the free areas, the Veterinary Services are on high alert and disinfection mats have been placed at crossing points. 24-hour checks are being carried out to prevent the transfer of infected products or animals. The government is engaged in a diplomatic marathon, communicating with the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and the European Commission to convince international partners that the biosecurity measures in the free areas are adequate. The economic damage from a widespread embargo is expected to be enormous.
