Mount Athos Proposes Canonization of Ioannis Kapodistrias, Says Director Yannis Smaragdis

Director Yannis Smaragdis revealed that a proposal for the canonization of Ioannis Kapodistrias has been submitted by Mount Athos, as informed by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. His film, “Kapodistrias,” has already attracted over 145,000 viewers. Smaragdis accused the Hellenic Film Centre of political interference in funding decisions, claiming that projects with national and historical content are rejected in favor of those serving the “woke agenda.” Conversely, he praised the contribution of the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, to the film's realization, highlighting her support and the public's reaction. Smaragdis expressed his belief that the Greek people are not indifferent and respond to works that promote national identity, while calling for a reassessment of the country's course. He believes that Kapodistrias represents an opportunity to discover our better selves.
