Von der Leyen Visits the Green Line with the Cypriot President

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, visited Nicosia accompanied by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides. The visit included a tour along the Green Line, where Ms. von der Leyen visited an exhibition on the Cyprus Question and listened to a student choir. She then toured the old town of Nicosia and spoke with shopkeepers. The President of the Commission was guided by Titina Loizidou, a refugee from Kyrenia, who won a legal battle against Turkey regarding her property rights. This choice of Ms. Loizidou as a guide highlights the importance of the refugee issue and property rights in Cyprus. President Christodoulides and Ms. von der Leyen enjoyed coffee at a cafe near the Panagia Faneromeni Church. This visit is part of an effort to strengthen cooperation between Cyprus and the European Union. The delegation accompanying Ms. von der Leyen included the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Constantinos Kombos, the Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, and the Government Spokesman, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, indicating the high political importance of the visit.
