December Rainfall at 116% of Normal

The average rainfall in the free areas of Cyprus during December reached 116% of the normal, amounting to 122.8 millimeters compared to the monthly average of 105.6 millimeters. The total rainfall from October 1st to January 1st was 159.2 millimeters, covering 83% of the normal amount for this period. The highest rainfall was recorded in Polis Chrysochous (219.2 mm, 220% of normal), the Stavros tis Psokas area (249.3 mm, 154% of normal), Athallassa (83.3 mm, 144% of normal), and Athienou (88.1 mm, 144% of normal). For January, until 8:00 a.m. on Friday, the rainfall was very small, only 0.1 millimeters. This data comes from the Department of Meteorology and is preliminary. The increased rainfall in December, compared to the normal, is an important factor for the island's hydrological situation, although the total rainfall since the beginning of the hydrological year remains lower than the average. The development of rainfall in January will be crucial for the final assessment of the hydrological situation.
