EU-Mercosur Deal on Hold as European Parliament Refers it to EU Court

The European Parliament has blocked the EU-Mercosur trade agreement, referring it to the EU Court to examine its legal basis. The decision was made by a narrow margin (334 votes in favor, 324 against, 10 abstentions) and could delay the implementation of the agreement for up to two years. The agreement, which has been negotiated for over 20 years, covers a market of 700 million citizens and has sparked strong reactions from farmers across Europe, who are protesting against the deal. The European Commission has limited options, while France has already expressed its opposition to the agreement.
