Stratis Matthaiou: Intensification of Public Services Digitization Needed

Stratis Matthaiou, Secretary-General of PASYDY, emphasizes the critical need to intensify the digitization of public services by 2026. He believes that Cyprus is significantly lagging behind other European countries in this area and that digitization is essential for increasing productivity and improving citizen service. While acknowledging some positive steps, he stresses that more effort is needed to modernize processes, reduce bureaucracy, and optimize service delivery times. Furthermore, Mr. Matthaiou highlights the active involvement of civil servants in the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2026, emphasizing that they will play a crucial role in the successful completion of related tasks. He expresses confidence that the public service has the right personnel and expertise to meet the challenges. Regarding 2025, Mr. Matthaiou describes it as a year of significant achievements for PASYDY, with the main issue being the agreement on the Automatic Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). He also mentions the submission of proposals for tax reform and the ongoing discussion on public service reform, pointing out the need for corrections and improvements to the legislation. In summary, PASYDY aims to accelerate digitization, ensure the effective participation of civil servants in the Presidency of the Council of the EU, and continuously improve the Public Service, with the goal of better serving citizens and enhancing Cyprus's competitiveness.
