Erhiyurman Proposes Four New Checkpoints - In Nicosia, Mia Milia, Pyrgos and Louroujina

The Turkish Cypriot leader, Erhurman, has proposed the creation of four new crossing points between the two communities, from Mia Milia to Pyrgos and Louroujina. This proposal is linked to his desire to discuss “common powers” based on political equality in areas such as hydrocarbons, energy, maritime zones, trade, security, and EU citizenship. Erhurman avoided naming the form of the solution he seeks, focusing instead on the methodology and procedures of the discussions. He emphasized that the discussion on the reuse of common powers is paramount and that he does not wish to act alone in these areas. He believes that political equality is essential for the successful management of these issues. His view is that naming the solution model should come after the finalization of the procedures and methodology. Erhurman argued that the assessment of the will to resolve the Cyprus issue should not be limited to negotiations but extended to daily political practice, emphasizing the importance of confidence-building measures. At the same time, he acknowledged the inevitable Turkish dimension to the Cyprus issue, stressing that a solution against Turkey is unfeasible. Regarding the checkpoints, Erhurman stressed the need for a second vehicle crossing point in Nicosia, as well as the expansion of crossing points to other areas, such as from Mia Milia to Pyrgos and Louroujina. He believes that opening new checkpoints is important for strengthening communication and cooperation between the two communities.
