Prevention Gaps Favor Mega-Fires - Suppression Alone is Insufficient, European Scientists Warn

Scientists from across Europe have warned that Cyprus and Europe as a whole are overly focused on suppressing wildfires rather than preventing them, a strategy proving inadequate in the face of climate change and increasing fire incidents. The report by the European Council of Academies of Science (EASAC) highlights the need for proactive land and landscape management, integrating fire risk into spatial planning, and investing in prevention and the creation of resilient landscapes. Professor Efthymios Lekkas emphasized that suppression is difficult once fires become massive, even with abundant resources, as the effectiveness of cooling diminishes dramatically due to high temperatures. For Cyprus, EASAC proposes integrating fire risk into all policies, including climate adaptation, civil protection, agriculture, and water management, as well as strengthening regional cooperation. The emphasis is shifting from simply reacting to fires to proactive management and adaptation to climate change.
