Key Political Developments in Cyprus in 2025

In 2025, Cyprus was at the center of significant political developments, primarily related to the Cyprus issue. Two expanded conferences were held in Geneva and New York, with the leaders of Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriots expressing their readiness for further talks under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General. The UN appointed Maria Angela Holguin as her Personal Envoy and the EU appointed Johannes Hahn as a Special Envoy for Cyprus. At the same time, Cyprus strengthened its international collaborations, welcoming Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and signing a Strategic Partnership Agreement with France. The country is also preparing to take over the Presidency of the EU Council in the first half of 2026. The trilateral cooperation between Cyprus, Greece, and Egypt remained important for promoting stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, with the 10th Trilateral Summit held in Cairo and the signing of memoranda of cooperation in various fields. In addition, Cyprus received a positive response from the US, gaining access to American defense programs. President Christodoulides presented an eight-point package for roadblocks and Confidence-Building Measures, while emphasizing the need to strengthen the country's security and defense capabilities due to ongoing challenges and the Turkish occupation. Finally, the UN Security Council unanimously renewed the UNFICYP mandate until January 2026, supporting efforts to restart negotiations.
