Inaugural Ceremony of the Cypriot Presidency: Impressions from the Artistic Part

The inaugural ceremony of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union included an artistic part that aimed to capture the Cypriot experience, combining history, present and expectations for the future. The performance, presented at the Main Stage of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation, opened with the national anthems of Cyprus and the EU. The hour-long artistic program was structured in three acts, with a clear dramaturgical line that started from the traumas of the past, passed through modern Cyprus as a member of the EU, and culminated in a vision for reunification. Each act was based on the work of a Cypriot artist, with young and experienced creators connecting eras and generations. The performance utilized the language of art, combining history, tradition and modern artistic media. References to the 1974 invasion were presented in a lyrical way, reminding of the experience of loss and pending issues. The music of Andis Skordis, performed by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, contributed to the creation of a bridge between East and West. Particular emphasis was placed on the visual arts, with Nikos Kouroussis creating a sculpture on stage, symbolizing the ongoing effort to shape Cypriot identity. The ceremony as a whole presented an impressive and moving depiction of Cypriot history and culture.
