PEO Demands End to Exploitation of Students in Internships

The PEO (Pancyprian Federation of Labour) denounces a “new retreat” by the Government on the issue of student and young worker internships, as the new Minister of Labour stated that the Government will await the completion of processes at European level for the European directive, before proceeding with national legislation. The PEO considers this development a “clear step backwards”, given that the discussion at European level was already known and should not have delayed national legislation. The PEO points out that young workers/students, who are forced to work in the context of internships to obtain a professional practice license, will continue to be exploited indefinitely, with the grey areas surrounding the internship regime remaining. It accuses the Government of aligning itself with the position of the employers' side, which seeks to delay and maintain the current situation. The PEO emphasizes that trainee students are workers who produce work and profit, often without pay and without labour rights, and are subject to systematic exploitation. Furthermore, it states that all necessary steps have already been taken to promote national legislation, such as listening to the views of all stakeholders and establishing a special technical committee. Finally, the PEO appeals to the Government to submit the internship bill immediately, as it has repeatedly committed to, and to proceed with adjustments once the procedures at European level are completed.
