Jakarta Becomes World's Largest City Amid Sinking and Flooding Crisis

Jakarta has become the world's largest city with 42 million inhabitants, according to new UN data. This rise is not due to a population boom, but to a change in how city size is calculated, now including the entire metropolitan area and informal settlements. Simultaneously, the city faces serious problems of land subsidence and flooding, due to decades of groundwater extraction and climate change. Jakarta is built on unstable ground, and over-pumping of groundwater has led to soil instability, causing some areas to sink at a rate of up to 20 centimeters per year.
