GBL: The 'Date Rape Drug' and Why It's Dangerous

A 78-year-old man has died and four others are hospitalized in Larnaca, Cyprus, after using gamma-butyrolactone (GBL). GBL is an industrial substance that metabolizes into GHB, a powerful central nervous system depressant, also known as the 'date rape drug'. GHB causes drowsiness, euphoria, loss of inhibitions, and, in severe cases, loss of consciousness and memory. The substance is clear, easily mixes with drinks, and is difficult to detect, making it dangerous and linked to sexual assault incidents. Using GBL carries serious risks, as the difference between a therapeutic dose and an overdose is small, especially when combined with alcohol or other substances.
