Customs Department: EU Customs Framework Reform a Success for Cyprus

The agreement on the reform of the European Union's customs framework has been hailed as a significant success for the Customs Department and Cyprus. The agreement, reached after lengthy negotiations, provides for the creation of a unified and state-of-the-art EU customs data hub, which will facilitate interaction between importers and exporters with customs authorities. The new data hub will enhance data integrity, traceability, and the effectiveness of controls. In addition, improved customs simplifications for trusted traders are being introduced, aiming to save time and costs, while a new handling fee is being established for small parcels. A key element of the reform is the establishment of the EU Customs Authority, which will oversee the operation of the data hub and support the risk management work of national customs authorities. The reform aims to facilitate global trade, improve the collection of customs duties, and strengthen controls on dangerous or unsafe goods. Overall, the new system is expected to allow for stronger controls without unduly burdening authorities and traders. Cyprus, through its Presidency, played a crucial role in reaching the agreement, coordinating discussions and achieving consensus between the Council and the European Parliament.
