Tax Department: Zero VAT on Essential Goods Throughout 2026

The Tax Department has announced the continuation of the application of a zero VAT rate on essential goods throughout 2026, based on a relevant Decree of the Council of Ministers. The measure aims to support households and contain the cost of living. Products covered by the zero VAT rate include infant formula (liquid and powder), baby and adult diapers, as well as feminine hygiene products (tampons, sanitary pads). In addition, zero VAT will apply to a wide range of fresh vegetables, such as potatoes, tomatoes, onions, garlic, leeks, cabbages, cauliflowers, broccoli, lettuce, radicchio, carrots, radishes, cucumbers, legumes and others. It will also apply to fresh fruits, such as bananas, figs, avocados, citrus fruits, grapes, melons, watermelons, apples, pears and seasonal fruits. The Tax Department reminds that the measure applies only to the specific categories of products defined in the Decree and calls on economic operators to fully comply with the provisions.
