Golden Age of Eclipses Begins in 2026

The year 2026 is expected to be a year of exceptional astronomical phenomena, with a rare sequence of eclipses. Specifically, there will be three total solar eclipses and three annular eclipses (with the "ring of fire") within just three years. This coincidence is similar to that of 2008-2010 and is considered by experts to be one of the richest in eclipses of the 21st century. 2026 begins with an annular solar eclipse on February 17th, visible only from remote areas of Antarctica. This is followed on March 3rd by a total lunar eclipse ("blood moon") visible from North America, Australia, Asia, and the Pacific. This eclipse will be the last total lunar eclipse until 2029. The highlight of 2026 is the total solar eclipse on August 12th, visible from eastern Greenland, western Iceland, and northern Spain. Totality will last up to 2 minutes and 18 seconds near Iceland, and this is the first total solar eclipse visible from continental Europe since 1999. This period will continue with two more total solar eclipses in 2027 and 2028, with the 2027 eclipse being the largest of the 21st century, with a duration of totality of up to 6 minutes and 22 seconds and visible from Spain, North Africa, and the Middle East. The last eclipse of the three-year period will be visible from Australia and New Zealand, with Sydney experiencing its first total solar eclipse since 1857.
