Supreme Court Rejects Appeal Against Russian Citizen's Extradition

The Supreme Court of Cyprus has rejected an application for a writ of habeas corpus by a Russian citizen detained and facing charges of tax evasion in Russia. The applicant sought to prevent his extradition to Russia, citing fears of human rights violations and potential torture. The Court ruled that the evidence presented did not demonstrate that the applicant was at real risk of having his rights violated in Russia. It noted that allegations of violations primarily concerned political activists and journalists, while the charges against the applicant related to common tax evasion offenses. The Larnaca District Court had previously approved the extradition of the Russian citizen to Russia for trial. The Supreme Court's decision confirms the initial ruling and paves the way for his extradition.
