Although plant-based, lactose-free, and often fortified with calcium and vitamin D, it typically has a higher carbohydrate and added sugar content compared to other plant-based beverages, such as almond milk. The increased amount of carbohydrates can lead to sharp spikes in blood sugar, especially when consumed in the morning. Unlike cow's milk, oat milk is low in protein and fat, which help regulate blood sugar and promote satiety. A cup of oat milk contains approximately 16 grams of carbohydrates, an amount close to a slice of bread. Therefore, those monitoring their carbohydrate intake should take this into account. Experts emphasize that oat milk is not unhealthy, but its consumption should be moderate and combined with other nutrients, especially for people seeking better blood sugar control or a more balanced diet.
